The history of the site dates back to 1986, when ERSA – later Minera TEA – installed the first Maerz PFR lime kiln in Argentina. The circular kiln, featuring a refractory lining with arches and pillars and having a capacity of 300 t/d, was built in La Laja in the province of San Juan and laid the foundation for the use of Maerz technology in the country.
In 2005, the plant was expanded with a coal firing system, significantly increasing flexibility in fuel selection. Just one year later, a Maerz Finelime® kiln was installed, with a production capacity of 300 to 400 tons of burnt lime per day. The kiln was equipped with a dual firing system for natural gas and petroleum coke.
In 2019, the Calidra Group from Mexico acquired the plant. As part of this acquisition, Calidra awarded the contract for the construction of the first 600 t/d Maerz PFR lime kiln in Argentina, which was successfully commissioned in 2024. Particularly noteworthy is the use of high-pressure fans providing the process air. Their implementation contributes to simpler and lower-maintenance operation while simultaneously improving the plant’s energy efficiency, resulting in significant electricity savings. In addition to the kilns, a new classification and milling plant for lime was constructed. This facility enables precise grading of the quicklime, ensuring higher product quality and optimal fulfilment of customer requirements.

These developments underline Calidra’s commitment to a sustainable and future-oriented production at the La Laja site. We are proud to be part of this success story.
